Chapter 1: Captured
Ryo woke with a start. How long had she been on that cage? How long had she been riding on this noisy, tumbling object? Probably hours, but for Ryo those hours felt like eternities. It was hard to believe that in the morning of that very same day Ryo had been comfortably hunting for food... and it had been her first solo assingment. Before her capture, Ryo had been living with a pack of eevees like herself in a forest not too far from a human town. Perhaps if Ryo's pack had lived closer to the center of the woods, she would've never been caught.
Ryo bit the bars of her cage in a desperate attempt of cutting lose, but the bars wouln't move. Ryo tried agian, this time biting harder, and again the bars stayed the same. Ryo tried again and again until her jaws hurt. And still the bars stayed solid as ever. Of course, if pokemon were kept inside these cages, naturally they had to be resistant even to the hardest attacks. Ryo sighed and curled herself up, she thought of her parents, her friends, her entire pack. She was supposed to bring food for them that day and she had failed; now her pack would be hungry, and all because she had been ambushed and captured by that human... that human she should have seen coming.
Ryo was still a young eevee, so perhaps it was her own inexperience and exitement that had been her downfall, but Ryo knew that even though she was young, she still should've been more cautious.
"Augh! This cage is so small!" Ryo protested. She got no answer except for the constant rumbling and moving of the human machine that was carrying her cage. But Ryo knew she wasn't alone: there were other cages with pokemon inside them, but neither had made a sound for hours. <Perhaps they're all asleep> Ryo thought <But how can they be sleeping when they've been kidnapped! Aren't they worried of what might happen?> Ryo knew about humans, after all, her pack lived close to a human town, and sometimes young human pups would go into the woods to capture pokemon using strange spherical objects called "pokeballs" which trapped inside any pokemon that touched them. According to the eldest pokemon, those who were captured inside the pokeballs were "trained" by these humans and develop close bonds with them. But Ryo had never seen or heard of humans who would capture pokémon by shooting at them sharp needles that made you feel drowsy and place them in cages: these were obvoublsy not "trainers", but then, what were they?
Ryo knew instinctively that her captors were dangerous. But what di they want with her?
The machine suddenly stopped. Ryo held her breath; she colud hear the other pokemon waking and moving inside their cages. Then there was a flash of light and Ryo, accustomed to the dark of her moving, tumbling prison, was momentarily blinded. Then suddenly two huge arms grabbed her cage. And then Ryo was carried and taken to a huge human burrow. The human who was holding her caged walked very quckly and with huge steps, but Ryo managed to catch glimpses of more humans carrying other cages with various pokémon. Then Ryo was taken to a small room and her cage was placed on top of some high solid object that smelled like old pine.
"Madam!" said a deep male voice "Look what I got for you!"
Ryo saw a pale and flat human face getting closer to her prison and watching her with interest
"An eevee?" said the human who was staring at Ryo (by the appereance of it's face and the sound of it's voice, Ryo assumed this human was a female) "An eevee?!" said the female human again, this time in a louder, harsher tone "What's so special about this creature?! I need something big and evolved, not a clump of fluff!"
The male human flinched "M-madam! Please, relax!" he cried "Take a closer look at it! I've never seen an eevee with such markings! Not only that, but this one seems to be very healthy!"
Tha female human pressed her face closer to Ryo's cage. Ryo snarled, threatening to bite the female if she came any closer. But the female smirked and moved her face away.
"Well, well, Rob!" said the female, sonding pleased "It looks like you were right about this one. Indeed, this eevee has a very shiny pelt, and those spots on it's eyes! And that zigzag stripe on it's tail! This one is sure to be very valuable! And it has a nice fighting spirit too! Yes, I think we can use it."
Ryo stood still. the human was talikng about her birthmarks. Ryo knew was not like most eevees in appeareance: right under both her eyes, Ryo had three circular dark spots, and there was a dark zigzag pattern parting the part of her tail, separating the brown half from the tan half.
"Well, I'll take this one with my prized collection." said the female human, taking Ryo's cage.
Later, Ryo was placed in a room full of more cages with pokémon inside them. These pokémon, Ryo noticed, also had unique markings or colorations (shiny pokémon) unussual to their species.
"Now, what have we got here. A new member of the collection!" Someone said among the cages.
Ryo looked around, trying to find the pokémon who had adressed her, and found a bayleef with bluish- green teardrop-like spots around his eyes. The bayleef was looking straight at her with an amused and cocky smile across his face.
"What's so funny?" Ryo asked, a little bit angry about the bayleef's taunting expression
"Oh, nothing" said the Bayleef calmly "it's just that it's been a while since a minion brought Madam Eliza a shiny or a pokémon with unussual markings."
"So? What is so funny about it?" Said Ryo, whose anger was increasing
"Temper, temper, kid" said the bayleef "You must learn to controll yourself, if you don't, then you'll die from boredom!"
Ryo stared incredulously at the bayleef "What do you mean by that?" she asked.
"Simple," said the bayleef "listen to the rules of Mdam Eliza's collection. Rule number one: get used to your cage, because you'll never get out; Rule number two: you're now a piece of collection, nothing more; And rule number three: All the activities you will do for the rest of your life are eating and sleeping."
Ryo shook her head in disbilief. Was that it? She was doomed to be part of some collection of an evil female human, and being treated as am item? "No way!" she cried "I refuse to stay here all my life!"
The baylef stared at her "But kid, you have to; you may think you can escape this place but you can't, simple as that!"
"And why do you think there's no hope? Surely there's a way I can get out of here!" said Ryo
"Listen, kid, I understand what you feel: I myself thought I could get out easily when I first arrived." The the bayleef turned around so that Ryo could see a huge ugly scar that ran all the way from his right shoulder to his tail. "This mark may look nasty" he said "But it is actually the remainder of... something that almost killed me while I was trying to escape. There were a raichu and a ratatta with me... they couldn't resist it."
Ryo decided not to answer. If the bayleef was serious about his scar then it was hopeless to escape, and whatever had left bayleef with such a scar had to be very menacing; after all he had hesitated at mentioning it.
It was official, Ryo would be stuck like this forever...
"Hey, kid, by the way what's your name? Mine's Weed"
